For the past few weeks [livejournal.com profile] kateaw and I have been watching a series of Italian TV movies collectively titled Inspector Montalbano. A Sicilian detective series based on crime novels by Andrea Camilleri, the films were produced from 1999 through to 2011. We recorded them as BBC Four showed the latter twelve films over the past few months; I hope they reshow the earlier films so we can catch them.

While I’ve watched a fair few subtitled films and television programmes, I haven’t seen so many Italian ones. There is an entertaining expressiveness in the language, and as a result Kate and I have been talking to each other in cod Italian accents. It’s hard to resist answering the phone with “Pronto!”

I’m a bit of a sucker for detective drama, particularly when it doesn’t wallow in misery or deprived city centres. One of my favourite ways to spend an evening is to sit next to Kate and watch ninety minutes of on-screen detecting.

The beauty of the Sicilian countryside and buildings is evident in the films, as is an appreciation for the cuisine (although Montalbano’s meals are rather fish-heavy for my taste).

I'll look out for the books; it appears that many of them have been translated into English.

We’ve been greatly enjoying the Transatlantic Sessions series on BBC Four; performances with American and Scottish folk musicians playing together. Well worth watching.

Best thing BBC Four has ever done is to show old episodes of Top of the Pops, at 7.30pm on Thursdays. We’re working through 1976; well before I started watching TOTP, but Kate is familiar with much of the music. Love that Brotherhood of Man have topped the charts for every one I’ve seen so far. How long was Save Your Kisses For Me number one?
