A week and a half off work. Kate and I started with a drive down to my parents in Nottingham, where we caught up with Beth after her holiday in Spain. She is getting used to her annual holiday with her grand-parents.

We spent the first weekend with friends for our “Frogmarch” holiday. This time it was at White Lodge Farm, near Hingham in Norfolk. As usual I spent much of the weekend cooking. Very satisfying. Wonder where we’ll go next year?

Then we had a few days back in Nottingham, where I had great fun driving about in father’s new Discovery. And we had a great family dinner out at the May Sum Chinese buffet in the centre of town.  Loads of good veggie food; might become a regular destination.

On Thursday we came home to St Andrews, driving in our new car: a red Volvo XC70, which replaces the grey BMW 530d. Easy comfortable driving, a few years younger, better fuel economy, and it isn’t grey. What isn’t to love?

The last few days have been filled with eBaying, and watching Relic Hunter on Netflix. This evening we watched the Bahrain F1 (only the highlights, boo hiss BBC) — I know they have to edit it down, but I wish they would show the full prize giving instead of ending the prog with interview after tedious interview.

Our next family holiday will be a week in Bute at the end of June, to mark my 40th birthday.

Back to work tomorrow. Wonder what will be waiting for me.

Goodbye to the Audi, and welcome back to the BMW. It was delivered to us this morning, with a shiny new rear bumper and boot lid. Looks good! Mind you, it still has a scrape down the right side, but that was an entirely different incident.

I found the Audi pleasant, but not inspiring. Glad to get the familiar car back. Kate and I celebrated with a pizza, and listened to very loud ’80s metal on the way home from Dundee (Dio-era Sabbath! Slayer!).

I couldn’t connect my iPhone to the stereo in the hire car, so I’ve spent the last couple of weeks driving to Radio 3. It is the least offensive radio station, but leaves me yearning for distorted guitars.

Well, they said that it would be a “like for like” hire car! We have a grey German diesel estate car standing in for our usual grey German diesel estate car.

I rang Direct Line this evening to get an update. Having spent 15 mins on hold yesterday on their regular 0845 number, resenting every second that I was paying to listen to the scratchy music, I was delighted that http://www.saynoto0870.com/ could provide an 0800 equivalent. Calls to 0800 are free on Skype, and just to reinforce my happiness, I was only on hold for a minute this time.

The other party’s insurance company has contacted our insurer, and so things can progress. Our car should be collected at some point this week by Direct Line’s preferred “local” garage, which is forty miles away in Perth.

We’ll have a hire car for the duration; it is due to be delivered tomorrow. As our claim is against the other party’s insurer, Direct Line have arranged a “like for like” hire car. They’re giving us an Audi A6. I don’t know much about the Audi range, but I assume it will be quite pleasant.

The analogue television transmitter serving Dundee and north Fife was turned off today, making Dundee Scotland's first "digital city" according to the BBC news story. The antediluvian analogue television receiver built into my car is of no further use. The Digital UK web site didn't have anything to say about in-car television. Maybe I need to buy a new car.
