One of the all-time great Christmas albums is A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector. It fits into that rare sub-genre of Christmas music by a convicted murderer.

Featuring his regular artists, the album showcases Spector’s famous “wall of sound” production technique. Designed to reproduce effectively on AM wireless (in mono), it was an innovative attempt to make the most of the limited quality of the equipment that was typically used to play pop music in the early 1960s. To modern ears it can sound dense and heavily compressed, but the arrangements and production set standards that have been much copied since.

And it is quite Christmassy.

We dined tonight to the sound of Blackmore’s Night and their 2006 album Winter Carols. Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night follow their usual pattern of traditional and modern songs performed in a folk-rock style, with a hint of the Renaissance in their use of historical instruments.

Their sound is mellow and pleasant, but on many songs lacking in the passion and joy that one would associate with Christmas. And Ms Night has a nasty habit of singing too many notes for my taste — just stick to the tune, woman! Still, the album as a whole is an interesting addition to the Christmas catalogue, and worth a listen.

Today’s Christmas treat has been Rob Halford’s recent album Halford III: Winter Songs with his eponymous band Halford. Best known for his work with Judas Priest, Rob Halford is joined here by American guitarist Roy Z, who collaborated on several of Bruce Dickinson’s solo albums.

A heavier, more serious, metal sound than yesterday’s Twisted Sister, there is much to appreciate in a classic heavy metal take on original and traditional Christmas songs.

All carols should have guitar solos. No, really, they should.

For Beth, the beginning of December means a daily chocolate from her advent calendar. For me, it means Christmas music. I rather like Christmas music as a genre, and have always started playing Christmas music on the first of December.

Now with the benefit of Spotify, I have a much wider selection available. What joy! I’ve been having fun finding interesting Christmassy oddities to listen to. But early results of my careful research suggest that the finest Christmas album ever is Twisted Sister’s A Twisted Christmas. [personal profile] kateaw will grow truly sick of this album before the Christmas season is over.
