I haven't guaranteed a cheque by card for a very long time. Probably only a couple of times in my life actually. But I still frequently send cheques in the post (where a guarantee card shouldn't be used), so will miss them when they finally go. Postal orders are a poor substitute IMHO, and bank transfer / credit card isn't always a good option either.
