Back in my bed tonight

Last night Beth and I slept in a tent in the garden. Beth had been very excited about the idea of camping (perhaps fuelled by the Swallows and Amazons books that Kate has been reading to her). Andrew kindly lent us his tent, and Beth and I had a pleasant night outside. It did make me very aware how bright the streetlights are, and the traffic noise on the Crail road.

Beth has been particularly enjoying Scooby-Doo recently. CBBC has been showing the early-2000s series What’s New Scooby-Doo?, which is a return to the classic Scooby-Doo format. One of the episodes featured a camp (in the American school-child sense), and mentioned “s’mores”, a food I’d vaguely heard of. Research suggested that they could easily be approximated at home, so we toasted marshmallows over Andrew’s BBQ, and squidged them between Hovis digestives, with a layer of Nutella. The others seemed to enjoy them; I didn’t bother as I’m not fond of marshmallows.

I really liked Swallows and Amazons, but I just couldn't get anywhere with any of the others: I bounced off Swallowdale and Winter Holiday, and always felt a bit sad about that.

Hanna–Barbera produced at least two other "young people solving ghost-related mysteries" series at about the same time, neither of which entirely caught on in quite the same way as Scooby Doo. Scooby Doo was about a group of kids and their dog investigating apparently supernatural mysteries which turned out to have a mundane explanation; Goober and the Ghost Chasers was about a bunch of kids and their dog (who was able to turn invisible) investigating mysteries which usually turned out to have a supernatural explanation; and The Funky Phantom featured a bunch of kids, their dog, and a friendly ghost and his cat, solving mysteries which turned out to have mundane explanations.

oooh! Smores! Next time, use Cadburrys dairy milk chocolate as the WHOLE POINT is to have the hot goey marshmallow melt the chocolate bar...

(clearly I revert to approximately 12 years old at the very mention of Smores...)
