Carrot cat

As I tidied up after breakfast this morning, I looked out of the kitchen window and watched a ginger cat saunter around our garden, walk into my raised vegetable bed, dig itself a hole, and do a poo among my nascent carrots.

This has not improved my opinion of cats or their owners.

I shouted at it. It ignored me. Kate shouted at it. It went away.

Kate is scarier than me.

Scary Kate

As you are about as scary as a baby blue, fluffy teddy bear that's not saying much!

It seems to me to be 100% an issue for humans and 0% an issue for cats.

I think the natural population density for wild cats is very low, as predator species. Domestic cats are also 'subsidised' by human feeding. So it is down to humans to be very responsible about neutering domestic cats and not allowing them to roam freely where it is inappropriate e.g. in urban areas where there is that most effective predator of cats, the motor vehicle. Cats can easily live to 20+ years of age, but apparently the life expectancy of an urban cat is just 4 years.

This is why my cats only go outdoors under supervision within my own garden.

Heh.

My general rule of life is that most people aren't actively malevolent, but people in all walks of life can cause problems unintentionally ...

I feel for you Toby... I cant get my cat to poo outside! He will run to the kitchen door and do the kitty potty dance until I let him in to use his litter box. I will say this though... he doesnt wander from the back garden and all of our landscaped bits have stones on them... maybe a layer of pebbles would help deter kitties from using your garden as a toilet.

Funny thing is, the cat I had prior wouldnt go to the bathroom outside either.

I have heard there is some ultra sonic device that works with a motion detector you can put down to scatter rabbits and cats. I *think* I saw it on amazon, or maybe it was the local Dobies...

Good luck. And Yummm Carrots! :) What else have you guys planted?

ps.

if all else fails... train their cat by teaching them your yard is out of bounds--Goto pound stretcher or somewhere like that and buy a super soaker water gun (good for distance shooting) Fill with water, Aim and shoot.

I have used this training tool with my cats when they were kittens to train them not to jump on countertops and eating surfaces. To me pawed feet belong on the floor. Sadly, the cat I have now isnt as nicely trained as my prior cat, but that is my fault! (My previous cat Tyler would NOT get on furniture or your lap without asking permission. Also, as I am allergic... No animals are allowed where I sleep. We put a gate at the stairs... that is for the cat... not the baby. :) Again, my other cat had free range of the house, because he had more involved training from me.

This is my second cat... I was always a dog owner and used to train as a hobby. So, naturally, I trained my cat as I would a dog. I think sadly most cat owners are too lazy to train a cat. I like animals but dont want them walking on surfaces where I will be eating, preparing food etc.

sorry for the ramble... up waiting for my lil guy to go back to sleep.

Again the water gun method works-unless you get a freak cat that loves water. But buying the gun is something useful you can use later with Beth playing in the garden. Oh, or if you want to challenge me to a water fight. I must admit... I love a good waterfight! :) hee hee.

I was just looking at mutual interests and was pleased to find someone who has also listed the Folio Society. It's going to take a few years yet before my collection becomes as fulsome as I would wish.

As earlier today I had the ordeal of taking one of my cats (both of which remain indoors) to the vet's office for vaccinations, this post caught my eye. Hope the wanting owner has since improved.

Given how new things are about DW, it feels as though we're engaged in an extended virtual ice breaker. In light of that, hello. :)

The books I've been tending to acquire haven't been well suited to reading to children, but yes. Those books are a fantastic way to introduce a love of and respect for literature to young people. Just seeing or handling those books leaves me smiling; they are such a tangible pleasure.
