Oh, for a lie in! But Beth wakes early at the weekend. This morning she brought Kate breakfast in bed — a chewy bar and an apple — and then later brought me toast with Nutella and a glass of Ribena. How kind! Mind you, it was more her idea of breakfast than mine, and she was kind enough to eat most of it for me too.

We bought some seeds yesterday; carrots and spring onions. Beth and I will plant them in our vegetable patch later this morning, while Kate is out for her walk along Lade Braes.

Eggs are my favourite breakfast food. Usually I have fried or scrambled eggs on toast, with an occasional detour into the world of boiled eggs. At the weekend Kate mentioned that she was a whizz at making omelettes (proving that one can still learn something new after years of marriage), and she made me an excellent omelette for breakfast this morning.
